15mm Venetian Italian Wars (Blue Moon figures)
here's the beginnings of a 15mm Venetian Army which will be based for Pikette/Impetus, the figures are from the new excellent Blue Moon range and the decals are home made by me, cheers Pete.
I've painted BM ACW, War of 1812, SYW and GNW and the Italian Wars figures are by far the best. However there is some variation in heft ie some of the drummers and spearmen look like they've been to the gym compared with their comrades. The good news is most of the cavalry appear to be from new dolly's and most of the mounted figures (except the mounted arquebusiers) are significantly bigger than the SYW and Marlburian ranges.
My only criticism is the figures are very generic and many look too medieval and not very Italian and look a mismatch when put against the Landsknechts which would be more suited to the 1540's. Nevertheless the Gendarmes and Stradiots are the best I've seen in 15mm and some of the commanders are little gems.
Beautiful Pete. Decals? You never mentioned decals before and why arent they available in 28mm for wargamers who happen to have the odd unit of Venetians? Great brushwork as usual.
Cheers Robbie, the decals are my second attempt; my first go a few years ago failed miserably. I'm going to do a different Lion of St. Mark for the Stradiot shields and can send you some if you'd like, just let me know what size you would like them. after that I'll try and do some more fancy designs as I like the look of some of the Milanese and Neapolitan designs, cheers Pete
These look superb Pete, I am really looking forward to seeing your progress with this army.
Are you working on any more 28mm Renaissance Flags? I was hoping you may do some Flodden ones, I am currently printing out some to use and they just can't match yours!
Hi Oli, my new job is eating away at my painting time so I'm keeping this army quite small around 12 units or so; 5 units are painted so will put more pics up when they're based.
With regards to flags I would love to have a go at flags for Flodden however some new Venetian, Landsknecht and either Spanish or Louis XII are most likely.
Thats a very nicely painted unit of Venetians Pete, realy like the colours and those decals are superb too. I have a stack of bluemoons new range of Italian wars figures i am painting now, and of course they will look mighty fine waving your magnificent flags! Agree with you about the cavalry they are superb, and the infantry are better than anything available at the moment too!
Impressive and beautiful unit, red colors are stunning!
ReplyDeletecheers, Phil
DeleteHow are you finding the BM figs? I've used their F&IW stuff, and found them uneven - some are fantastic, some less so.
